Tom Handel, Co-Chair
Executive Director, Community Television Network
Tom is the executive director for the Community Television Network, soon to be Portland Media Center. His 21+ years of experience in public access television as a producer and board member in Lincoln County positioned him to be a valuable asset to CTN when he joined the team in December 1996.

Alban Maino, Co-Chair
Producer, Memory-Lane.tv & Dreamland Technology
Cape Elizabeth
Alban is the owner of Dreamland Technology, a production company based in Portland, ME, specializing in interactive media productions. He is also the founder of Memory-Lane.tv, a therapeutic, non-pharmaceutical approach to caring for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, through interactive multi-sensory stimulation.

Jim Boutin, Treasurer
Wildlife Filmmaker, Big Rock Films
Jim has vast experience as an operational and product management executive with a background in broadcasting, creative production software, and equipment manufacturing. He consults with various production and equipment companies. Jim is also a wildlife filmmaker working on a Maine based documentary and has done some projects with Aquaterra Films. He has a BSEE from the University of Maine.

Geoffrey Leighton, Secretary
Producer/Director, Leighton Images
After fifteen years of working in Los Angeles, Geoffrey moved Leighton Images, a high-definition digital production facility, to an 1810 farmhouse in Durham. He has produced numerous short documentaries for Apple Computers, and was the cinematographer, editor, and producer of a feature film based on the painter Marsden Hartley’s epic poem Cleophas and his Own. He co-produced and edited There Ought to Be a Law , winner of the Maine International Film Festival Activist award. Leighton Images produces documentaries for such clients as the City of Boston, L.L.Bean, Education Connection, Hilton Hotels, and Veterans Administration. Geoffrey also teaches Special Effects and Animation at University of Southern Maine, and has shared his wealth of knowledge and experience by teaching at at MECA and SMCC.

Nick Callanan
Founder & Co-owner, Producer & Project Manager, No Umbrella Media
Nick is the founder and festival director of the Maine Outdoor Film Festival (2012 to present), and  was New England Emmy-nominated in 2014 for the Portland Press Herald Magazine Program “Kimball and Keyser: Gimme Shelter.” Nick has collaborated on many short films including:  Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds: NYE 2015 – 2016; Live At The Studio Portland: Ghost of Paul Revere  – 2014; You Wanted to Be A Farmer – 2012; For Those Who Love Paddlers – 2012; and Now We’re Cookin’ – 2011. In addition to being the MFA’s newest board member, Nick serves on the advisory committees of Teens To Trails and the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend. Nick attended St Michael’s College in Colchester, VT and graduated with a degree in Journalism/Mass Communications. 

Allison Cooper
Assistant Professor of Romance Languages and Cinema Studies, Bowdoin College
Allison teaches courses on Italian cinema from neorealism through to the present day at Bowdoin College. She is currently at work on Modern Rome between the Sacred and the Profane, a book-length analysis of filmic representations of Rome and their treatment of the city’s dual identity as capital of the Catholic Church and capital of the Italian state. Allison serves as the chair of our Marketing Committee.

Mimi Edmunds
Adjunct Professor in Journalism, Emerson College
As a broadcast journalist with CBS for 15 years, including eleven at 60 Minutes, and at CBS’s documentary unit, Mimi then worked at PBS and the Discovery Network in Maryland, Washington, and Arizona. Her films have won Emmy nominations and Cable awards. She has taught at the Maine Media Workshops since 1986 and is currently an Adjunct Professor in Journalism at Emerson College in Boston.

John Fireman
Professor, New Media Department, Maine College of Art
Peaks Island
John earned his B.A. in Film Studies from Yale University, and went straight to work as story editor for New Line Cinema, while directing and producing his own independent film projects (his documentary work has been called “very Funny” by the NYTimes’ art critic Holland Cotter.) He earned his MFA from the Maine College of Art, and is now teaching in MECA’s New Media Department.

Mauricio Handler
Land & Marine Wildlife Filmmaker and Expedition Leader, Aquaterrafilms
Mauricio is a professional land and marine wildlife filmmaker and expedition leader whose documentary company, Aquaterra Films, produces Ultra High Definition content for stock, documentaries and commercial use. He was for many years part of the premier underwater photography team at National Geographic Magazine. Mauricio is passionate about creating more technical and creative workshops for members of the Maine film industry.

David Pierson
Professor, Media Studies, University of Southern Maine
David Pierson is a professor of media studies at the University of Southern Maine. He teaches courses in field and advanced field video production, broadcast writing, and film and TV criticism. He spent most of his early career working on film, video, and multimedia presentations for a number of audio-visual companies and contractors in north Texas and Louisiana.

Matthew J. Siegel
Director of Photography
As an award-winning director of photography, Matt conceives, designs, composes, and lights for commercials, features, documentaries, reality/adventure TV, branded content, and corporate communications. He balances his professional film career by conducting camera and lighting workshops around the world, demonstrating production techniques and new technology. He brings  extensive industry experience in these realms to the Maine Film Association, and serves as the chair of the Education and Outreach Program Committee.
